Getting to Cairns

Cairns Airport is the main gateway to Tropical North Queensland. It boasts international, domestic and general aviation terminals. It is serviced by major international, national and state air carriers. There are many direct flights for international travellers: New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Guam and Papua New Guinea as well as Singapore via Darwin. Cairns Airport is Australia's fifth busiest in terms of international passengers.

Cairns Airport offers both domestic and international flights. Airfield operations are 24 hours, and terminal operations including shops, cafes at both pre and post immigration points are open in accordance with flight schedules.

VISA Information

Foreigners need an Australian visa to travel to Cairns from overseas. The type of visa required depends on nationality: many tourists can now apply online for an eVisitor visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA).

Australia ETA to go to Melbourne

Travellers from 8 countries should apply for an ETA visa at least 1 or 2 days before heading to Australia to visit Cairns. These countries are:

• South Korea

• United States

Citizens of the above countries can stay in Australia for up to 90 days with an ETA. With 3 months to explore, travellers can visit Brisbane and other top destinations such as Perth and Sydney.

eVisitor visa to travel to Cairns

The eVisitor visa for Australia is available to passport holders from EU Member States plus 9 other European nations.

Like the ETA, the eVisitor visa is obtained online, tourists should submit their application at least 48 hours before departing for Cairns. The eVisitor visa is valid for multiple trips to Australia during the 12-month validity period, each stay can be up to 3 months long.

To travel to Cairns from elsewhere, one of the other types of Australian visa is required.
